Job Opening: Technical Specialist, UNIVERSITY HEALTH NETWORK

The Personal Health Information Technology team operates within the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation and is focused on the design, development, and implementation of electronic interventions for consumers, patients, and clinicians in the hospital and community setting. The Centre has developed eHealth and mHealth interventions and conducted subsequent clinical trials for type 1 and type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and kidney disease.

The Technical Specialist will work with the other software developers to help design and develop novel information communication technologies that are aimed to improve the health outcomes of patients. Experience and knowledge of the healthcare field and programming mobile technology will be an asset. Suitable candidates must also demonstrate excellent communication skills (written and oral), advanced analytical, and creative problem solving skills. The Technical Specialist will be required to acquire new programming skills as necessary, and should therefore have solid computer programming fundamentals.

The ideal candidate should have five to eight years of in-depth and hands-on software development experience that encompasses the whole project cycle, including business requirements and needs analysis, end user requirements gathering, prototyping, testing, deployment, maintenance and project management. Experience with Ruby development and debugging, MySQL or PostgreSQL administration and database design is required. Other key requirements include experience with test driven development, deploying with Capistrano or the like, and enterprise software design and implementation. Experience with Rails or Sinatra application development, RESTful Web Services, Agile development process, Rsepc, Cucumber would be important assets. Experience with HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, tcp/ip programming, sass, and haml would be an asset.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

    Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics or related field or recognized equivalent
    Experience with Ruby development and debugging
    Object-oriented design and programming experience
    MySQL or PostgreSQL administration and database design
    Deploying with Capistrano or the like
    5 to 8 years experience as a software developer
    Ability to develop, plan, schedule and implement systems plans and solutions
    Ability to perform unit testing and integration testing, data analysis and/or system analysis
    Enterprise software architecture experience; business systems analysis and/or problem resolution skills
    Excellent analytical, prioritization, organizational, interpersonal, user client relationship and support skills
    Good presentation, verbal and written communication skills
    Ability to handle multiple projects
    Deadline, detail-, and quality-oriented
    Self motivated and able to work independently
    Adept at continuous learning
