Background:
MMM is looking to leverage the successes of the global firm and expand the Canadian group by building a new department to service the broader energy sector. The initial focus for the group is on electricity distribution companies in Ontario, where there are significant opportunities for infrastructure renewal projects for distribution utilities. As the growth of the renewables industry continues, there are opportunities for the group to design smaller-scale 'green energy' (<>20 MW), and renewables that fit into the distributed generation model, including district energy, rooftop solar installations and co-generation projects. The plan is to grow the current team of 20 people in the distribution services division to 100 in the next couple of years.

Job Descriptions:


MMM is currently seeking an Electrical Designer to join our team, based in our Thornhill office. Working under the direction of the Design Manager and the supervision of the Senior Engineer, the Designer will be responsible for engineering design, and the coordination of drafting activities, in support of the engineering services as provided by the group.

Job Responsibilities:

·       Plan, organize, schedule and coordinate the activities of assigned drafters, assessing resources and allocating work to meet priorities.
·       Interpret project scope and requirements, identifies design conflicts or discrepancies, establishes basic design criterion, and coordinate with administrative staff in process and communication with clients.
·       Participate in verification and confirmation of final project scope with client.
·       Produce of engineering design documentation and drawings of the respective discipline for multiple projects.
·       Review of design issues with supervisors and subordinate staff for resolutions to problems.
·       Review, monitoring and control of engineering designs and deliverables in accordance with the established schedules, resource budgets, expenditures, and the latest development of projects.
·       Regular meetings with Senior Engineer or Design Manager for progress review, issue updates, consultation, administrative information etc.
·       Participate in studies, project definition and technical bid preparation.
·       Advise on designs, processes or other engineering methods.
·       Participate in project proposals and departmental planning, such as training, program development and establishing objectives and priorities.
·       Assist in development of work plans and strategies, and management of resources to achieve set goals.
·       Assessment of payments on construction work by contractor, where required.
·       Adhere to Company/departmental policies, directives, programs, and administrative procedures.
·       Liaison, and coordinate with other departments, utilities, government agencies, current and potential clients as required.
·       Instruct, supervise and monitor design progress to sub-consultant on projects to meet established schedule.
·       Provide technical and administrative directions and coaching to subordinate staff (where applicable).
·       Provide progress reports to the Senior Engineer and Design Manager on regular basis.

Job Qualifications:


·       3 - 6 years of experience in the electrical power distribution/ transmission and/or related industry.
·       Ability and experience to work on multiple initiatives, projects or business transactions to achieve business targets.
·       Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
·       College or University graduate in electrical engineering.
·       Knowledgeable and proficient of current codes, standards, regulatory practices of related authorities.
·       Experienced and proficient in power distribution software such as ETAP, PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, PSAF(CYME), EDSA etc. preferred.
·       Fluent in use of general application software: MS Office applications, ACAD, Microstation.
·       Resourcefulness and ingenuity in implementing policies in various different situations.
·       Demonstrates sound judgment and initiative in the interpretation of policies, and in the planning and execution of projects.
