Job Opening: Store Planning & Construction Assistant, DESIGN GROUP STAFFING INC.

Job Description:
Our client, located in a modern Toronto, Ontario facility requires a Store Planning & Construction Assistant for their retail locations. This is a full-time, permanent position reporting to the Construction Manager. Primary responsibilities include assisting the construction manager with store design, purchasing (material/trades) and construction coordination. Specific responsibilities include:
1. Prepare designs (using AutoCAD) for new store fixtures and contact suppliers for fabrication.
2. Prepare purchase orders for architects, engineers and trades relating to construction projects including estimating quantity take-offs from drawings (i.e. light fixtures, floor tile, wall hardware, floor fixtures etc.) as well as process invoices for payment.
3. Respond to requests from store or district managers for minor repairs (i.e. broken windows, HVAC, lighting) by arranging the appropriate vendor and notifying security as required.
4. Generate AutoCAD drawings for detail books (i.e. wall sections & hardware, cash desk, lighting, floor fixtures, etc.) used for contractor bidding and site work.
5. Participate in the development of preliminary store concepts within the design criteria provided by the landlord and liaise with architects and engineers to produce final drawings for permit.
6. Interact with the finance department and contractors throughout the bidding process to establish budgets for new and renovated stores.
7. Prepare, circulate, monitor and update construction schedules.
Job Qualifications:
1. Post secondary education in design or architectural technology.
2. Practical experience in retail store planning and construction including knowledge of (and the ability to research) applicable building codes.
3. Proven experience working with various trades and understanding terminology related to electrical, mechanical, structural, architectural, plumbing, etc.
4. Proficient with AutoCAD as well as MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
5. Strong mechanical aptitude with a practical approach to problem solving.
6. Valid Ontario driver's license with access to a reliable personal vehicle (some travel to work sites is required).
7. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work cross functionally and communicate effectively with many disciplines (from corporate/internal to external/trades).
8. Excellent written and oral communication skills, French fluency would be an asset.
